The Origins of TalkTalk
The TalkTalk concept began with Opal Telecoms, which provided fixed line telephone services to the corporate sector. The company was bought in 2002 by Carphone Warehouse, who via this acquisition gained access to its own switching network. This allowed Carphone Warehouse to move into the domestic market, with plans to undercut rival BT.
The TalkTalk brand, which was aimed at domestic consumers, was launched in 2003. The Communications Act of that year had made it possible for the first time for UK customers to switch telephone providers without the need for installing additional equipment or dialling a prefix.
By the following year, 385,000 domestic customers had signed up for the TalkTalk service, which shook up the UK telecoms industry by offering free landline calls between all TalkTalk customers. The company made a profit in the region of £10 million in 2004, and Opal Communications won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and Innovation.
Broadband and Early Problems
TalkTalk further disrupted the telecoms market in 2006 by offering “free broadband” to customers signing up for a telephone landline. The company gained more than 400,000 new customers almost instantly, but the service initially could not cope with the unexpectedly high demand, and as a result the company’s reputation for customer service began to suffer. However, TalkTalk now had more than 2.5 million customers.
By 2009, TalkTalk’s broadband coverage reached a quarter of the UK residential market. The company demerged from Carphone Warehouse and was listed on the London Stock Exchange. Following this, Opal Telecoms rebranded as TalkTalk Business, expanding the company into the commercial market.
TalkTalk launched its subscription television service, TalkTalk TV, in 2012, along with a mobile phone service which initially operated on the Vodafone network. It was only the second company in the UK to offer the “quadruple play” service of landline telephone, mobile, broadband and television, after Virgin Media.
