Consumer group Which? picked up on the news, drawing a response from TalkTalk, who said that “Our internal data shows levels of customer satisfaction have increased in recent months”, contradicting the independent research conducted.

TalkTalk has offices in Warrington, Salford, Irlam, London, Gateshead and Milton Keynes, with 5 of those 6 being contactable on the phone. TalkTalk also has offices in Sutton Coldfield and London East. It is not made clear by TalkTalk whether these are call centres, or distribution points. What we can say, however, is that customer internet chatter revolves around a clear frustration about calls to TalkTalk being outsourced abroad. Most people have complained about their enquiry being outsourced to India. TalkTalk, however, have not openly disclosed how many of their calls are being outsourced abroad now.

About TalkTalk

TalkTalk is a telecommunications company based in London. It offers fixed line telecoms, broadband internet, subscription television and mobile phone services to domestic and business customers in the UK.

TalkTalk is one of the UKs more popular telecoms companies, known for its low pricing in comparison to many of its competitors. It currently has over four million broadband customers, and employs approximately 2,300 staff. The company earned a net income of £72 million in 2015.

In addition to the TalkTalk brand, which serves its domestic customers, the TalkTalk Group has the subsidiaries TalkTalk Business and TalkTalk TV Store.

TalkTalk Business

TalkTalk Business is one of the fastest growing B2B telecoms providers in the UK, offering fixed line telephone, mobile, internet and data services to UK businesses. It currently has over 180,000 business and public sector customers. TalkTalk has invested over £600 million into its business services to gain a larger slice of the market.

Business customers can call the TalkTalk contact number 0844 381 5232 for customer service.

TalkTalk TV Store

TalkTalk TV Store is a video on demand streaming service. Formerly known as Blinkbox, TalkTalk bought the service from supermarket chain Tesco, along with its broadband service, in 2015 for £5 million. The service was rebranded as TalkTalk TV Store in 2016.

The Origins of TalkTalk

The TalkTalk concept began with Opal Telecoms, which provided fixed line telephone services to the corporate sector. The company was bought in 2002 by Carphone Warehouse, who via this acquisition gained access to its own switching network. This allowed Carphone Warehouse to move into the domestic market, with plans to undercut rival BT.

The TalkTalk brand, which was aimed at domestic consumers, was launched in 2003. The Communications Act of that year had made it possible for the first time for UK customers to switch telephone providers without the need for installing additional equipment or dialling a prefix.

By the following year, 385,000 domestic customers had signed up for the TalkTalk service, which shook up the UK telecoms industry by offering free landline calls between all TalkTalk customers. The company made a profit in the region of £10 million in 2004, and Opal Communications won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and Innovation.

Broadband and Early Problems

TalkTalk further disrupted the telecoms market in 2006 by offering “free broadband” to customers signing up for a telephone landline. The company gained more than 400,000 new customers almost instantly, but the service initially could not cope with the unexpectedly high demand, and as a result the company’s reputation for customer service began to suffer. However, TalkTalk now had more than 2.5 million customers.

By 2009, TalkTalk’s broadband coverage reached a quarter of the UK residential market. The company demerged from Carphone Warehouse and was listed on the London Stock Exchange. Following this, Opal Telecoms rebranded as TalkTalk Business, expanding the company into the commercial market.

Recent History

TalkTalk launched its subscription television service, TalkTalk TV, in 2012, along with a mobile phone service which initially operated on the Vodafone network. It was only the second company in the UK to offer the “quadruple play” service of landline telephone, mobile, broadband and television, after Virgin Media.

In 2013 it became the first UK telephone provider to block nuisance calls at network level and offer all landline privacy features, such as caller display and last call blocking, for free.

Despite losing a reported 100,000 customers following a security breach in 2016, the TalkTalk brand continues to profit and now has four million domestic customers.
